Bobsled Trail from Bonneville Shoreline

Riding the banked turns of the Boblsed

The official Olympic Bobsled course is in Park City, however Mountain Bikers are prohibited from riding its banked turns and fast descents. Fortunately riders have a trail option in the foothills above Salt Lake City. "Bobsled" is a ride that will leave you wanting more and more. View Bobsled Photo Gallery. It starts at a juncture on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, which can be accessed from Dry Creek Canyon above the University of Utah (long route) or in the neighborhood at the top of North Terrace Hills Drive above the Avenues area of Salt Lake City. There is no marked start, but there is a well defined path that descends south at an intersection along the Shoreline Trail. From this point, you can look north into City Creek Canyon and directly west a hiking trail leads up a steep hill. Also, another hiking trail rises northeast along a hillside.

The first stretch of the Bobsled descent is fast and loose, like the running start of the real thing. There is a quick turn to the right at the bottom of the straightaway and then the dropoffs and steep banked turns begin to take you for a wild ride. There is no problem building speed as you fly down the creek bed, climbing high onto the banked turns and then sweeping across to the other side. Recent improvements have allowed higher lines on the turns as well as strategically located jumps for the serious downhiller. The lower section has also benefited from trail work to allow for a smoother ride with more options, depending on your riding abilities. There are gap jumps over ravines, tabletop jumps over cars, and high banked turns to test your skills. The jumps and drops continue to the bottom, where you finish the trail at East Chandler Drive.
