Wasatch Crest Trail, Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah
One of the epic rides in the Salt Lake City Area, the 'Wasatch Crest Trail' winds through alpine meadows, descends jagged ridge lines, and provides 360 degree views of the Wasatch Mountains. View Wasatch Crest Photo Gallery At elevations near 10,000 feet and exposure along ridge lines, the trail has a short riding season from late June through October. This is an intermediate to advanced trail where legs, lungs, and handling skills are essential. 'Puke Hill,' the initial climb to the ridgeline, is a lungbuster and may induce vomiting, hence the name.
After a fast and wide double track, riders find a hard packed singletrack through fields of wildflowers and aspen trees. At the gnarly section above Desolation Lake, riders can choose to descend the Mill D North Fork into Big Cottonwood Canyon, or go right to Mill Creek Canyon's Big Water Trail (on even numbered days only). The ride is best accessed via car shuttle or drop off on Guardsman Pass. Since it is part of the Great Western Trail, it is very well maintained and can be connected to trail systems in Park City as well as Mill Creek Canyon.
